3 Days in Washington D.C: A Whirlwind Tour.

September is an ideal time to visit Washington D.C. The summer crowds have dissipated, the weather is pleasantly mild, and the city is buzzing with activity. From world-class museums and historic monuments to vibrant neighborhoods and diverse culinary scenes, there’s something for everyone in the nation’s capital.

Day 1: A Monumental Day

Start your day at the iconic Lincoln Memorial. Gaze upon the majestic statue of the 16th President and absorb the inspiring words etched on the walls, look out for the covered up mistake! From there, stroll along the National Mall, taking in breathtaking views of the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building.

Take a detour to the awe inspiring Martin Luther King memorial, wander along and read some of his most inspirational quotes. This part of the mall is quieter and shaded in the woods. It’s a beautiful monument, powerful in its simplicity. Keep heading around the tidal basin for the fascinating Franklin Roosevelt memorial, and finish your National Mall monuments tour at the Thomas Jefferson memorial.

Next, head to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Explore the rich heritage of African Americans, from slavery to the Civil Rights Movement. Continue your journey to the National Museum of the American Indian, where you can learn about the diverse cultures and traditions of Native American tribes. Stop here for lunch and try some traditional native American food. There’s a lot to choose from, and it was all delicious!

For a futuristic experience, visit the Air and Space Museum. Marvel at the awe-inspiring exhibits, including historic aircraft and spacecraft. As the day winds down, head into the city for some cocktails and food around 14th at NW. We had a fabulous dinner at Doi Moi and some great drinks at Chicken and Whiskey. Finally we ended up at Trade for beers and a drag show.

Day 2: Art, History, and Shopping

Begin your day with a breakfast bagel and coffee at Call Your Mother. Next up a visit to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick gallery. Admire the stunning collection of American art, from colonial portraits to contemporary masterpieces. Check out the National Museum of women in the arts too, it’s great to see the representation! When I visited, the Renwick had an amazing exhibition about women and fibres.

Next, pay your respects at Arlington National Cemetery. Witness the solemn beauty of this historic site and honor the fallen heroes. It’s a huge place that is so peaceful. The highlight was the JFK memorial, with quotes from the assassinated president.

Afterward, head to Georgetown, a charming neighborhood with boutique shops, trendy restaurants, and historic houses. Explore the waterfront, browse the shops, and grab a bite to eat at one of the many eateries. Make sure you walk down the spooky steps from The Exorcist film! We grabbed dinner at Washington DC’s best pizzeria, Boogy and Peel!

Day 3: Vibrant Culture and Waterfront Fun

Start your day in U Street NW, a vibrant neighborhood with a rich history of African American culture. Explore the trendy shops, restaurants, and bars. Don’t miss the chance to try some delicious soul food at a local eatery. There is a lot of really cool street art around here, plus a memorial to the African Americans who fought in the civil war.

Head south along 11th St NW and check out the cute watermelon house. Stop for a pint at the Little Gay pub, then head across to the LOVE mural. It was still early when I got there so I missed out on the cool cocktail bars/restaurants in this little area.

In the evening, head to The Wharf, a bustling waterfront district. Enjoy stunning views of the Potomac River at one of the bars or waterfront restaurants. The seafood market here wasn’t that impressive, but there is plenty to keep you occupied. If you come in the daytime you can take a ferry, rent a kayak or cycle around Hains Point.

Tips for Your Trip:

* Purchase a DC CityPASS: This pass offers discounted admission to popular attractions, including museums and tours.
* Use public transportation: The Metro system is so convenient and a really quick/affordable way to get around the city.
* Pack comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking!
* Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially during the summer months. It was still hot in mid September when I visited.
* Remember most of the museums are free, and even the ones you have to pay for usually have free days so plan your schedule accordingly.
