Gothenburg: A Perfect Blend of City Buzz and Island Tranquility.

Gothenburg, Sweden’s beating heart on the west coast, is a city that effortlessly blends maritime charm with urban energy. My itinerary promised a taste of everything Gothenburg has to offer, from a thrilling day at Liseberg amusement park to a peaceful escape on the car-free island of Vrångö. Flights were so cheap with easyJet from Manchester. We stayed at Hotel Spar Garda, it was a little out of the City but the public transport is really good. Plus the hotel included a great hot and cold breakfast buffet and a sauna!

Day 1: A Dive into Gothenburg’s Depths

Start your day with a fika, a sacred Swedish coffee ritual, at one of the many cozy cafes lining the canals. Fuelled up, explore the historic Feskekörka fish market, a feast for the senses with its impressive seafood displays. Grab a freshly caught lunch there and savor it by the harbor, watching the majestic ships sail in and out.

Dive deeper into Gothenburg’s maritime heritage at the Maritiman museum, where you can explore historic ships and delve into the city’s shipbuilding legacy. In the afternoon, head to the Gothenburg City Museum for a dose of local history and culture.
As the sun sets, head out for a few drinks around the main street of Kungsportsavenyen.

Day 2: Island Escape to Vrångö

Take a ferry from Saltholmen to Vrångö, a car-free island haven in the Gothenburg archipelago. Breathe in the fresh sea air, and check out the views from Lotsutkiken. We walked along the coast and found a cute little beach area. We spent a few hours swimming and sun bathing, the weather was glorious.

You can also rent a bike to explore the island’s quaint villages, and soak up the serenity of the Swedish countryside. Vrångö is a paradise for seafood lovers; savor the freshest catch of the day at a traditional harborside restaurant. If you time it right, you can take the ferry back as the sun sets across the archipelago.

Day 3: Thrill-Seeking Adventures at Liseberg

Liseberg, one of Europe’s largest amusement parks, is a must for thrill-seekers. Get your adrenaline pumping on exhilarating rollercoasters like Balder and Uppswinget, or take a more relaxed spin on the nostalgic Liseberg Railway. There were barely any queues for the rides, but we got absolutely soaked on the log flume! I treated myself to some churros while we dried off.

Don’t miss the park’s charming fairytale castle and the super fun Jukebox ride. End the day with a classic American-style burger at Max, a popular Swedish fast-food chain. They have an amazing veggie selection and soooo many dip choices. Check out some really cool street art dotted about the City too!

Day 4: Unveiling the World of Volvo

Step into the world of Volvo, a renowned Swedish car brand, at the interactive The Volvo Museum. Explore the company’s heritage through exhibits showcasing vintage cars, cutting-edge technology, and sustainable solutions for the future. It’s such a fun place, everything is interactive and there’s a beautiful terrace to enjoy a beer or glass of wine after all the fun.

Spend the rest of your last day soaking up the atmosphere in Gothenburg’s charming neighborhoods. Take a stroll through Haga, a district brimming with colorful wooden houses, independent shops, and cozy cafes. Check out the Kafé Magasinet, it’s so beautiful inside. We also hiked up to the small fortress of Skansen Kronan. Here you can enjoy amazing views of the city and a great local beer.

In the afternoon, head to the vibrant Kungstorget and Esperantoplatsen squares. They’re great places for people-watching and admiring the city’s architecture. Although the LGBTQ+ monument in Esperantoplatsen is a little sad. The Bee Kök & Bar at the Stora Saluhallen market is a great LGBTQ+ space. The food was delicious and it’s great to see the representation in the City.

As you depart Gothenburg, you’ll carry with you memories of its maritime charm, historical sites, thrilling attractions, and, of course, the delicious flavors of fresh seafood and classic Swedish fare.
