Summer in Beautiful Zurich and a Winter Wonderland in Basel
While Zurich and Basel are distinct Swiss cities, I’ve combined them in one post to give a contrast of what to expect in Summer and Winter. I only spent a day and night in both, but I got a good feel for them nonetheless. Here’s how you can spend a magical time indulging in raclette, exploring charming streets in Zurich, and soaking up the festive atmosphere of Basel’s Christmas markets.

Summertime Charm in Zurich
I arrived in Zurich from Liechtenstein, it was the easiest airport for me to fly in and out of. So I had half a day here before flying back to Manchester early the next day. I decided to stay in a pod hotel at the airport, it was so comfy and great location. Zurich airport has a huge shopping center attached to it which is useful! The train is so easy and quick to get to and from the City. So I dropped my bag off, checked in and headed into Zurich.

Exploring Zurich
Start your day with a leisurely stroll through Zurich’s enchanting Altstadt (Old Town). Admire the architectural gems lining the cobbled lanes. Definitely take a walk along the river, this was my favourite spot. Where people were soaking their feet in the cool water on their lunch breaks, it was so cute.

As lunchtime approaches, whet your appetite with Zurich’s quintessential comfort food – raclette. Picture melted cheese scraped over steaming potatoes, crusty bread, and cured meats. It’s a hearty and delicious way to sample Switzerland’s premier food groups. The one I got was good but didn’t blow my mind, so I’m keen to get back and try more!

In the afternoon, follow the river down to the lake, you can go for a swim or lounge in the huge park on the Northwest side of the lake. I lay here for a while, listening to music and soaking up the atmosphere. In the evening, try out a couple of the gay bars. Kweer and Cranberry Bar were really good. Kweer was great to sit and watch the world go by. Cranberry bar had some great drinks and was busier later on.

I finished the evening off with a takeout from Pizza Nation, sitting on the edge of the river. I had a swan who was very interested in my pizza, even trying to grab the box at one point! But it was a great way to relax reflect on a fun holiday.

Basel and the Christmas Markets
Basel boasts one of Europe’s oldest and most cherished Christmas markets. As you wander through the beautifully decorated Barfüsserplatz, the aroma of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and gingerbread will fill your senses. Arriving from the quaint and picturesque towns of Mulhouse, Colmar, and Strasbourg, I was on a true Christmas market tour!

Exploring Basel
I wandered around the old town in the day, meandering along until I hit some Christmas markets. Basler Munster is a beautiful church, and if you head through towards the river you get amazing views across the Rhine and snow capped rooftops. The nearby square had a huge Christmas tree and lots of stalls. It kept trying to snow on and off, which gave it an even more magical feel.

So I spent some time browsing through the stalls, overflowing with Christmas ornaments, local crafts, and an array of culinary delights. Be sure to try Basel’s specialty – Läckerli, a type of delicious gingerbread cookie. I also tried a fondue dog! Where they pour delicious melted cheese into half a baguette. A brilliant and tasty idea.
There are several spots with markets island you can pick up a map in most hotels. I stayed at the Marriot near Messeplatz, the tram system is really good to get you about the city. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll along the Rhine River, marveling at the city’s reflection on the water’s surface. Since I was flying the next day, I just went out for a quick dinner and a couple of pints. The next day I quickly checked out the Gerbergässlein, Basel’s famous mural of various musicians. It was soon time to fly home, the Christmas spirit well and truly filled to the brim.

I only got to spend half a day in both cities, so there is lots more to see, do and eat! The beauty of Zurich and Basel lies in their endless possibilities for exploration. So lace up your boots, bundle up, and embark on your own Swiss adventure!
